Caravan Roadworthy Requirements for 751kg to 2000kg ATM

Caravans and trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) between 751kg and 2000kg must generally meet the following requirements:

• At least one braked axle fitted to the trailer.

• Tyres with the correct load rating for the Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM).

• A correctly rated safety chain with a load capacity equal to or greater than the ATM.

• A compliant tow coupling securely attached to the A-frame.

Caravan Roadworthy Requirements for 2001kg to 3500kg ATM

Caravans and trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) between 2001kg and 3500kg require additional safety equipment, including:

• Brakes fitted and operating on all wheels.

• An approved breakaway braking system capable of automatically applying the brakes if the caravan becomes detached from the towing vehicle.

• Two correctly rated safety chains with a combined capacity suitable for the Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM).

• A compliant tow coupling and braking system that meets Queensland requirements.

What We Inspect During Your Caravan Safety Certificate

During every Caravan Safety Certificate Inspection, our licensed inspectors carefully examine the following components:

• Stop lights, tail lights, indicators, clearance lights and number plate light are operating correctly.

• Light lenses are free from cracks, fading and water ingress.

• Front and rear reflectors are correctly fitted.

• Caravan body is securely mounted to the chassis.

• Walls and flooring are free from significant timber rot or structural deterioration.

• Chassis and A-frame are free from excessive rust, cracks or structural damage.

• Safety chains are correctly rated and permanently attached.

• Tow coupling is correctly rated, securely mounted and in safe working condition.

• Tyres have adequate tread depth, suitable load ratings and are free from cracks, splits and damage.

• Braking system operates correctly and complies with allowable tolerances.

• Brake shoes or brake pads have sufficient friction material remaining.

• Wheel bearings are correctly adjusted with no excessive movement or signs of wear.

• Chassis number is present on caravans and trailers manufactured before 1988.

• Manufacturer's compliance plate and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) are fitted where required on caravans and trailers manufactured from 1988 onwards.
