  • Registration Certificate or Registration Renewal Notice (if currently registered)

  • A level inspection area, preferably concrete or another hard surface

  • Approximately 500mm of clear access around the caravan or trailer

Before Your Caravan Safety Inspection

To improve the chances of passing your inspection the first time, we recommend checking:

  • Indicators are functioning

  • Clearance lights are operational

  • Number plate light is working

  • Tyres are in safe condition with legal tread depth

This can include lighting repairs, minor adjustments and other common roadworthy items, helping you obtain your Caravan Safety Certificate with minimal delay.

We also offer Caravan Gas Certificates, allowing both inspections to be completed during the same visit where required.

Things We Check During Your Caravan Safety Certificate Inspection

Our Caravan Safety Certificate and Caravan Roadworthy Certificate inspections are carried out in accordance with Queensland regulations and the Vehicle Standards Bulletin (VSB1) for light trailers. Every inspection is designed to ensure your caravan or trailer is safe, compliant and ready for Queensland roads.

We provide Mobile Caravan Safety Certificate inspections throughout Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, making it easy to obtain your roadworthy certificate at your home, workplace, storage facility or caravan park.

Caravan Roadworthy Requirements for 751kg to 2000kg ATM

Caravans and trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) between 751kg and 2000kg must generally meet the following requirements:

  • At least one braked axle fitted to the trailer.

  • Tyres with the correct load rating for the Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM).

  • A correctly rated safety chain with a load capacity equal to or greater than the ATM.

  • A compliant tow coupling securely attached to the A-frame.

Caravan Roadworthy Requirements for 2001kg to 3500kg ATM

Caravans and trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) between 2001kg and 3500kg require additional safety equipment, including:

  • Brakes fitted and operating on all wheels.

  • An approved breakaway braking system capable of automatically applying the brakes if the caravan becomes detached from the towing vehicle.

  • Two correctly rated safety chains with a combined capacity suitable for the Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM).

  • A compliant tow coupling and braking system that meets Queensland requirements.

What We Inspect During Your Caravan Safety Certificate

During every Caravan Safety Certificate Inspection, our licensed inspectors carefully examine the following components:

  • Stop lights, tail lights, indicators, clearance lights and number plate light are operating correctly.

  • Light lenses are free from cracks, fading and water ingress.

  • Front and rear reflectors are correctly fitted.

  • Caravan body is securely mounted to the chassis.

  • Walls and flooring are free from significant timber rot or structural deterioration.

  • Chassis and A-frame are free from excessive rust, cracks or structural damage.

  • Safety chains are correctly rated and permanently attached.

  • Tow coupling is correctly rated, securely mounted and in safe working condition.

  • Tyres have adequate tread depth, suitable load ratings and are free from cracks, splits and damage.

  • Braking system operates correctly and complies with allowable tolerances.

  • Brake shoes or brake pads have sufficient friction material remaining.

  • Wheel bearings are correctly adjusted with no excessive movement or signs of wear.

  • Chassis number is present on caravans and trailers manufactured before 1988.

  • Manufacturer's compliance plate and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) are fitted where required on caravans and trailers manufactured from 1988 onwards.

Common Reasons Caravans Fail a Safety Certificate Inspection

After completing thousands of Caravan Safety Certificate Inspections throughout Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, we regularly identify defects that could affect safety or prevent a Caravan Roadworthy Certificate from being issued.

Some of the most common defects include:

  • Worn or noisy wheel bearings caused by a lack of regular servicing.

  • Faulty, damaged or non-operational lights.

  • Cracked, faded or water-damaged light lenses.

  • Worn, cracked or incorrectly load-rated tyres.

  • Brake systems requiring adjustment or repair.

  • Worn brake shoes or brake pads.

  • Excessive wheel bearing play.

  • Rust or damage to the chassis or A-frame.

  • Worn tow couplings or damaged safety chains.

  • Missing reflectors or damaged compliance plates.

Regular servicing and preventative maintenance greatly improve the chances of passing your Caravan Safety Certificate Inspection the first time while ensuring your caravan remains safe and reliable for travel throughout Queensland.
