Caravan Break Safe - Brakes and Towing Safety

Today’s post is about caravans over 2000kg and the break safe unit
Most people don’t know what it is and how it works or the fact that you must text it upon every trip
This caravan has it in the front boot but others will have it in the caravan under the bed or hidden away in a cupboard
You must physically check that the system locks all 4 wheels up. You can do this by pulling the switch pin out and driving away slowly, it should lock all wheels. If it doesn’t, you will need to investigate further before setting off on your journey.

Hot Water System Gas Leak

Here is a common fault found on Caravan hot water systems, particularly Suburban and Atwood has operated hot water systems. After about the 5 year mark the gas valve can stop shutting down correctly and still hot a flame on the jet even when it’s turned off. This issue gone unnoticed can eventually melt the solids on the gas valve causing an even bigger problem!

Here is a little job we did this week, a Caravan Roadworthy and Gas Certificate on a Jayco Camper. Upon inspection I found that the brakes were not working at all, and as you can see here the old brakes have been dragging and are completely burnt out!
With in a day we had the new backing plates fitted and the bearings serviced ready for the new owner and the paperwork all sorted as well.

Caravan Roadworthy Inspection

Today we inspected a 10 year old standard on road caravan and found this! Looks like a few to many pot holes, possibly one more and the suspension would have come off.
It doesn’t hurt to look under your caravan once every few months, with an issue like this one it could have caused a very big accident on the road.
Not to worry we also fix things as a part of our on site caravan services and safety inspections.

Selling your caravan? One of my recent customers was doing exactly that. Upon looking at the old Roadworthy Certificate on the Golf Camper trailer we noticed that I had done the Camper once roughly 3 years ago and then we also noticed I had also inspected the Jayco Caravan in the back ground that he had just bought! What are the odds of that

Caravan Gas System Compliance Certificate

Recently we have found upon a few gas inspections quite a high number of jobs done here in Queensland by licensed gas fitters are still wrong, mainly not fitting compliance plates either because they have a restricted service licence and can not take on any modification work or they hold an open gas licence but still not doing the job correctly.
Â
If you’re having any modification work or a new fit out the owner of the caravan / camper must always check the persons gas licence has no restrictions and the gas fitter is filling out the paperwork correctly
P.S. also check for a little black Queensland Gas Compliance plate which can be seen in this picture.
